Wafalafel?
That’s right, a waffled falafel. I just discovered it….all over the internet. Actually, there’s a whole website (and now a book) about foods you can waffle. It’s called Will It Waffle?
I really, really don’t enjoy cooking. But I have a young family and they depend on me to feed them 3 times a day …plus snacks. Sigh. Not only do I not enjoy cooking, I’m also not very good at it. You see the vicious circle I’m in, right?
Well, today on my Facebook feed I saw a link to a list of foods that ‘will waffle’ and my brain said to me “Tanya, this could be the answer to all your dinner problems. A waffle iron is right up there with a slow cooker – everything is cooked in 1 place at the same time. That’s your kind of cooking”.
This could be huge for me. I didn’t want to get too excited though. Just how easy is it to make a meal using a waffle iron? An experiment was in order…..a waffling adventure, if you will.
Adventure-A-Day: Day 13
I clicked on the Facebook post and then clicked along a few more times until I came to the ‘recipe’. Although a recipe for homemade falafel was provided, it was also suggested that a store-bought falafel mix was just fine too. I bought the falafel mix. All I had to do was add water to the mix, wait 10 minutes and I was ready to waffle.
Next up was heating up the waffle iron, spraying it with a non-stick cooking spray and then transferring a large spoonful of the falafel mixture to each section of the waffle iron.
So far so good. Now for the real test. Wait 5 minutes for the waffled falafels to cook and then the taste test. I couldn’t help but think that if these waffled falafels (wafalafels) actually turned out well, they would make for a great lunch ‘main’ alongside a salad or a hearty late afternoon snack dipped in hummus.
When the waffle iron beeped 5 minutes later I pounced on it. Finger crossed.
Falafels do waffle! And they taste great.
Thank you Facebook for such a successful, albeit random, posting in my feed. This was a winner.
Anyone curious about what else you can waffle? If so, start here: Will It Waffle? and let me know if you end up having a waffling adventure of your own.
Wow, that’s crazy haha. I might try it. I wonder what other meals you can waffle? And I’m loving using the word waffle as a verb.
I know, how easy right! Here’s a quick visual list of other things you can ‘waffle’. http://www.buzzfeed.com/caitlinmorton/17-unexpected-foods-you-can-cook-in-a-waffle-iron-a3z1?sub=2315055_1297035
