November’s Adventure-A-Day: Day 10

There are two kinds of people in this world and tonight was the night for me to discover which side of the great divide that I’m officially on. I have my suspicions.

I’ve managed to avoid this for 20 years now but given that a new era is upon us with the release of the 2nd edition this week, my time has come to an end.

Tonight, I am watching the movie Dumb and Dumber. If you’ve already seen it then you already know which side you’re on. As I said, I have my suspicions as to where I’ll fall but I’ll reserve my comments for after I’ve actually watched the movie.DumbandDumber

My husband and many of his friends are planted firmly on the “it’s a classic” side of the divide. They know, and openly quote, many of the lines from the movie. With its sequel, Dumb and Dumber To, being released this week in Toronto – 20 years after the original film was released – I knew I wasn’t going to be able to hold out much longer. Plans have already been made for a group viewing of the new sequel this weekend so my husband has been (very) eager for me to see the original beforehand.

Tonight’s the night.

And now for a little adventure in movie land…..dumb-dumber

Adventure-A-Day: Day 10

I think I just lost a few brain cells.

To be fair, the movie was never intended to be a cerebral experience but it also didn’t make me laugh. I watched the whole movie and honestly kept an open mind but it just didn’t make me laugh. The gross parts were just gross – not my kind of humour – and the rest was just…..dumb.

Its quite clear that I’m not going to be part of the cult following that this movie has spawned. I guess it’s like the great cheese divide – those who like it, like it a lot but those who don’t (a.k.a. me) really don’t. I didn’t think the movie was awful but I won’t be quoting any of the lines any time soon either. It’s just not my type of humour. Maybe its just too dated for me to watch now, 20 years later, and appreciate. Maybe if I’d watched it all those years ago I would have responded differently??

I guess I’ll have to wait until I’ve seen the sequel – a modern-day take on the adventures of Lloyd and Harry – to make my final judgement. I think I’ll add alcohol to that experience, just to give it a running start.

Until then, I’m going to try to earn back those brain cells I just lost.

What side of the Dumb-and-Dumber divide do you fall on? Did you have an adventure today?

  2. Hilarious! I like the movie when I was 20 years younger. If I watched it today for the first time, I too, would probably think that it’s…..dumb. But admittedly, I love me a good Jim Carrey giggle now and then. :-)
